Self Portrait - Oil on Board.

I decided to attempt a self portrait after seeing the work of Micheal Gaskell. His work is SO detailed you cannot see any signs that it is a painting. I was so impressed by his work I thought, ‘Right. I must try this.’ Nowhere near as good as his work, but it’s my attempt. Took a while, but i was happy with how it turned out. Bits of it annoy me now, like the lips…just lack form. At this point i still hadn’t started using linseed oil, only turpentine. I began using my old brushes, which had slayed bristles, for blending. That was the main thing I learnt from working on this painting.

Took a vase of flowers into my bedroom and walked around them for a week. Still a bit unsure on paints, I used poster paint to do the black background…and now its flaking slightly.

First ‘proper’ use of colour. Came across picture on a bookmark, then discovered the piece was by Lawrence Alma-Tadema (now my favorite artist…although dead).
